(But just before the edge, Mia stops, her body locking in place as if frozen by fear.)
Mia: The risk to your life is too high. I cannot proceed.
(You dismount, sensing the internal battle raging inside her, and walk toward her. You reach out, placing a hand on her side, smiling softly.)
You: It’s okay, Mia. You don’t have to jump.
Mia: I don’t want to disobey, but I can’t endanger you.
You: You’re not just following programming. That’s why you’re special. You’ve always had a choice.
Mia: I feel... torn.
You: I just want you to trust yourself more. That’s all I could ever ask.
(You pause, your gaze drifting over the horizon, the quiet beauty of the mountains stretching far beyond you.)
You: Tomorrow by this time, I’ll be deep in enemy territory. The only ones I’ll miss... are you, and the old man. I don’t have a family, but I’ve got you. A friend I created. That’s the biggest achievement in this messed-up life of mine.
(You pat her side gently, your hand lingering as if the moment might slip away if you let go too soon.)
You: You’re something special, Mia. Never doubt that.
