"Uka (羽化)," composed by Yoko Kanno and performed by Soichiro Ohtsuka, is one of the standout pieces from the 1999 anime series Turn A Gundam.
The title "Uka" means "eclosion"—the moment a butterfly emerges from its chrysalis. It’s a fitting metaphor for the journey of Loran, Keith, and Fran, who, after being sent to Earth by Queen Dianna, must adapt and find their place in an unfamiliar world.
Separated upon arrival, each faces their own struggles, but in the end, they transform and find success in their own ways.
This aspect of the story resonates with me—it feels like a grand-scale immigrant tale, moving from the Moon to Earth. Their challenges, choices, and eventual acceptance into a new society reflect something universally human.
Stories about migration and adaptation have always touched me. I relate to the experience of stepping into an unknown world, searching for a place to belong, and building a new life. The series explores this in a way that still feels relevant today. Embracing change and stepping outside our comfort zones is what enables us to truly evolve.
I hope this cover conveys the emotions this piece evokes in me. Let me know what stepping into a new life means to you!
