Eternal Love (永遠の愛) - Cover | Super Dimension Fortress Macross

“Eternal Love” from Super Dimension Fortress Macross (1982) is one of my favorite pieces from the series. It beautifully captures the emotions of the show and makes me reflect on the differences between Macross and Gundam.

I’ve often wondered why Macross hasn’t achieved the same enduring popularity as Gundam. While the mecha designs in Macross are simple yet striking, the key difference lies in how the two series approach storytelling.

At its heart, Macross is a love story set against the backdrop of war, whereas Gundam is primarily a war story with elements of romance. Macross focuses on character relationships, while Gundam explores the broader scope of war and its effects on people.

This difference in direction has led the two series down separate paths. Romance stories tend to conclude once the relationship is resolved, but war stories can evolve as long as conflict endures. That’s likely why Gundam has had more room for continued development over the years.

Still, the love story between Hikaru and Misa in Macross is a true masterpiece. I hope you enjoy this cover!

Hikaru and Misa stand side by side near a round table in the wreckage of a spaceship, gazing at a vibrant sky. Text reads "Eternal Love" and "MACROSS".
