Sad Brothers (哀しき兄弟たち) - Cover | Saint Seiya

“Sad Brothers” from the 1986 anime Saint Seiya is one of my favorite pieces from the series. It brings back memories of how much I loved the anime when I was around eight years old.

At the time, my parents didn’t allow me to watch it. It aired after midnight, and they had heard that the story was too violent for kids. But the more they tried to keep it from me, the more curious I became. I secretly borrowed manga from my classmates and caught bits of the show late at night, lowering the volume so my parents wouldn’t hear.

I remember living in an imaginative world shaped by Greek mythology, dreaming that I was a Saint with my own hidden Cloth Box tucked away somewhere in our apartment.

Sometimes I wonder if Saint Seiya would have the same impact on today’s generation. The idea of sacrificing oneself for the goddess Athena and for the world might feel distant now. Even back then, I found myself questioning Seiya and his friends' stubbornness—"Did they really have to go that far?" I often thought while reading the manga.

Still, Saint Seiya remains a timeless classic. Phoenix Ikki has always been my favorite character—a lone warrior who fights not so much out of duty or love for others, but because fighting is simply in his nature.

This piece has always reminded me of Ikki’s sadness and solitude. I hope you enjoy this cover as much as I enjoyed creating it.
